Chapter 22

It took about a month after they retook the pictures under Malachai and Jordan's assumed names, but finally people were giving Reckless Disregard a chance.  Right before school started up again for Jordan, the band landed a paying gig at a back to school party the local high school was putting on.  Now 14 and a freshman in High School, Jordan was excited to start the school year off with a bang.  Their clients' requested all covers and they were all cool with that.  "It's not that the original stuff isn't awesome, but most of the people that are asking for covers.  Do you guys do a lot of Disturbed?" the young man whose parents' were writing the check asked.

Malachai laughed.  "Yeah, man, we can do Disturbed.  Jordan can belt out some David Draiman and she's good at it too.  She's like a female version of David of Disturbed."  Malachai was trying not to die laughing while he talked to the young man who's name was Kyle.  He was grateful that they were talking on the phone and not face to face.

"That's great.  She's also really great with all the old Evanescence stuff too.  Do you guys need a piano so that she can play that stuff too?"

Malachai buried his face in one one hand and fought not to burst into laughter.  "If you can get one on the stage, we'll use it."

"Great.  So, we'll see you guys in two days?"

"Sounds good to me.  We'll see you then."  Malachai ended the conversation as quickly as he could and fell onto his side laughing.  "That's fucking awesome!  Do we know any Disturbed?  Three of us are only kids of MEMBERS OF DISTURBED, YOU RETARD!"

David walked into the room.  "Are you ok, Malachai?"

"I'm great, Dad.  The guy throwing the party we're performing at has no idea that we're your kids."

"That was the point in you and Jordan using last names other than Draiman, right?"

"It was, but that kids is CLUELESS, Dad.  Logan kept Moyer and no one gets it!  These people are idiots, Dad."

"Don't tell me that the guy asked if your band does Disturbed stuff?"

"Oh yeah.  I told him that Jordan is a female version of you."

David laughed.  "That was brilliant, son.  Now, I want you to record the performance to that we can critique it."

"Yes, sir,"

"Maddie wants to go, what do I tell her?"

"We can't have guests at this performance or Jordan and I would take her.  Oh, Dad, when I Jake due home?"

"The day after your performance.  Now, Malachai, try not to get arrested.  Your mother and I will bail you out, but, try not to get into trouble anyway."

"Why are you cautioning me not to get arrested?"

"Because you're going to be in the same area as a bunch of high school boys and now she's a high schooler herself, Malachai.  Do I need to spell it out for you?"

"I'll keep her out of trouble, Dad."

"It's not her getting into trouble that has me worried.  It's her getting into trouble and you trying to ger her out of trouble and getting thrown in jail that has me worried."

Malachai laughed.  "I'll try not to get arrested for protecting Jordan, Dad."

--------------

They went to the location of the party and met with the clients, collected their payment, and rehearsed the day of the show.   The people they were playing for had gotten a Grand piano onto the stage for Jordan.  She laughed.  "Looks like I get to break out 'Call Me When You're Sober' for these jokers as well as a little 'Serpentine' and 'The Animal'.  So fucking exciting!"

"Curb your enthusiasm, sis", Malachai said in a whisper.  "All we have to do is wow these stupid fuckers for a couple hours, then we're going home.  I made Dad a promise not to end up in jail because of some jock and getting stupid."

"I'll behave, Malachai."

"It's not your that I worry about."

--------------

"See the dogs come running, smelling blood now, to an open sore, on the parasite, countless hearts have fallen, hard to number, Damnation's whore is looking for a victim tonight, With an angry soul and a wicked design, Your will cannot endure as your heart is torn away!

"I was caught up in the moment, We were alone and you seemed to harness the light, Even though I felt cold inside when you told me it would be alright, I had given up control and I didn't focus hard enough to see the warning signs, Your heart is Serpentine
."  Jordan was singing her heart out on the stage.  She wanted to make her father proud of her as she preformed his music.  She knew it wouldn't be an easy task because David Draiman would pick apart her performance stanza by stanza, but she was going to try.  "Serpentine" was the last song the band was doing that night.  Jordan was tired.  She'd given her all during each song in the set, doing just like her father did when he was on stage.  She took the energy that the audience gave her and threw it right back at them.  She was thankful that she was about to go home and get some sleep.

"The warning signs, Your heart is serpentine, Evil personified!  Your heart is Serpentine"  The song ended and she looked out over the smiled a satisfied smile.  "Ladies and gentlemen, we are Reckless Disregard and we are out of here.  I'm tired and I really don't give a shit what you bastards want." She laughed.  "Again, we're Reckless Disregard.  You fuckers enjoy the rest of your party."  They all gathered at the front of the stage and took their bow, and Jordan led them off the stage.
